Brainstorm the environment: What’s the intention of the icon, the market, visual elements, colors.
Always try it in negative space, maybe you won’t use it, but it can deliver more ideas.
Skip the obvious, explore it, start from there, but don’t use it.
One thing that I do is draw the entire thing in a hard pencil, like a 4H, very softly, then I start to skip elements, but keeping the shape, until I can’t take anything more but still get the idea, then you can start playing with the elements and make it yours, don’t forget to try negative space.
Try with a single stroke with, then try with some more.
I believe that you can must be able to make it in about two or three minutes, if not, it’s too complex yet.
Try to wrap it in a circle or a square.
Practice, not so much for “technique” but for your ability to capture complex elements and simplify them.
Make an icon from everything in your backpack, your fridge, your wallet, you garden ( I said this before, I draw to many leaves ).
Try to use lines and dots to represent texture if it’s necessary.
